Seminar: 2007 Robert Bateman, Wildlife Artist & Environmentalist

Robert Bateman, Wildlife Artist & Environmentalist

Dinner Speaker - Canadian Club of Halton Peel - Monday, November 26 - Oakville Conference Centre, Oakville, ON

The world's leading wildlife artist is the special guest speaker on November 26.

A native of Toronto, Robert Bateman now lives on BC's Salt Spring Island where he distils complexity into elegant simplicity, creating art that is accessible and enjoyable at many levels. He also devotes much of his time to environmental concerns, especially the preservation of the natural habitats of the wildlife that he portrays.

Bateman says:  "I can't conceive of anything being more varied and rich and handsome than the planet Earth. Its crowning beauty is the natural world. I want to observe it and to understand it as well as I can. And then I'd like to put it together and express it in my painting. This is the way I want to dedicate my life."

Born in Toronto in 1930 and a resident of BC's Salt Spring Island since 1985, Robert Bateman has been a keen artist and naturalist from his early days. He has always painted wildlife and nature, beginning with a representational style, moving through impressionism and cubism to abstract expressionism. In his early 30's he moved back to realism as a more suitable way to express the particularity of the planet.

Bateman has received countless honours and awards, including 11 honorary doctorates and Officer of the Order of Canada, our highest civilian honour. Recognizing his contribution to art and the environment, three schools have been named after him in Ottawa, Abbotsford and Burlington.

Through his long association with Mill Pond Press, thousands of wildlife lovers the world over have been able to enjoy Bateman prints. His life and art are chronicled in several books, films and television programs.

Join The Canadian Club of Halton Peel for this special opportunity to meet and hear from the artist whose paintings have heightened our awareness of nature and the environment and raised millions of dollars for conservation and human rights efforts.
