Community Living: Here’s to Happy Motoring

Here are a few new laws from the Ministry of Transportation that you should be aware of.  Gears wants to make sure your summer ends on a positive note and not one that will cost you fines and/or demerit points.

New Booster Seat Law

As of September 1, 2005, booster seats are required for children who:

  • Weigh 18 kg or more but less than 36 kg (approx. 40-80 lbs), and
  • Have a standing height of less than 145 cm (4’9”), and
  • Are under eight years of age (once a child turns eight, a booster seat is not mandatory).

Seat belts, child car seats and booster seats save lives.  Buckle up for every trip.  As a driver, it is your responsibility to make sure children are properly secured in your vehicle.  Failing to do so may result in a fine and two demerit points.

Making School Bus Travel Safer

Effective September 1, 2005, vehicle owners can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing.  Fines range from $400 to $2,000.

Let Transit Buses In

The law requires motorists to let transit vehicles displaying a yield-to-bus sign to re-enter a lane from a bus bay, unless it is unsafe to do so.  You may be fined $90 ($125 in Community Safety Zones) for not allowing the bus into the lane.
