Community: New Transit Tax Break To Aid Commuters

Transit users in Burlington, Oakville and Milton should save their receipts because they will be able to save enough annually on the cost of a monthly transit pass to get two free months of rides.

Starting July 1, 2006 Canada’s government provided a non-refundable tax credit on the cost of transit passes.  As a result, transit users who spend $80 per month on transit passes could save up to $75 this year and up to $150 next year.  Transit users are also able to claim expenses on behalf of their spouses and dependents.

The hope is that the credit will get people out of their cars and onto public transit.  Transportation is one of the leading causes of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.  Increasing public transit usage will help to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in cities.
