Health Care: Enjoy More of a Good Thing: Keep Summer Food Safe!
Keep Food at the Correct Temperature
- When cooking on a grill, use a meat thermometer to make sure meats are cooked to an internal temperature of 170 degrees for chicken and 160 degrees for hamburgers.
- Keep cold foods cold and…hot foods hot!
- Pack foods appropriately so that they will maintain the right temperature when you are traveling distances.
- Avoid keeping foods between 40-140 degrees Fahrenheit. This is considered the “danger zone.”
- Leftovers shouldn’t be left outside for more than two hours indoors, or more than one hour outdoors.
Avoid cross-contamination
- If you are away from your kitchen, bring wipes to keep surfaces and hands clean.
- Clean surfaces thoroughly between prep of vegetables, fruits, chicken and meats.
- Don’t handle or cook raw meats without washing your hands before and after handling different types of meat.
