Shopping: Face the Fall With Go Hang It! Accessories

Oakville resident Patti Kohanik has taken her love of jewelry and fashion and parlayed her interests into a fresh business venture. Having started Go Hang It! in March 2005, Patti is finding that many people are interested in viewing and buying the unique items which she hand picks during buying trips.

As Patti explains, "I don’t buy anything over the Internet; I like to see what I’m buying. My method is to follow my own tastes and pick what I’d like to wear myself."

So far her philosophy has worked well, judging from the collection of colourful and elegant earrings, necklaces, pins and scarves which I viewed on a recent visit to Patti’s beautiful home. (I couldn’t resist buying a pair of beautiful silver hoop earrings with dangling rhinestones for $18 -- all in the line of research, of course!) Although she occasionally hosts shows at her home, the primary way Patti displays her collection is by visiting the staff at professional offices and retirement homes, etc. during their lunch breaks. She will also travel to private homes to host showings for a few individuals or for a group, and is currently booking appointments up to December. Patti travels from Stoney Creek to downtown Toronto.

It seems quite an evolution from her previous career, which included 14 years as a buyer in the manufacturing industry, but it’s a journey which Patti has embraced. "This [running a business] is always something I wanted to do. In the past I found that whenever I’ve been out shopping, people would ask my opinion on clothing and jewelry, so I decided to make a business for myself out of it."

While keeping up with the newest styles and trends for the upcoming seasons, Patti also keeps her prices reasonable. There is nothing listed for over $50 and most of the items are priced between $25-$35. Payment is by VISA, debit, cash or cheque.

Go Hang It! is now receiving some delightful items for the holiday season and Patti reports that the prominent colours for fall are deep and jeweled. Colours such as purple and plum, deep green, ruby reds, blues, turquoise, an exotic ethnic look, and rhinestones, are also popular.

The bottom line for Patti is to enjoy what she’s doing, while adding sparkle to her clients’ day. "I have fun with fashion and I want people to have fun with it too."
