Fitness: Fitness Tips for The Tees

Fitness Tips for The Tees

Many golfers suffer from back pain, usually due to a lack of trunk rotation.  The more flexible and skilled you are, the more you can rely on your hips and trunk to rotate as you swing.  An effective golf shot requires hip and trunk rotation since that’s what gives power to your shots.  If you don’t rotate well, your back and arms will have to do a lot of extra work.

Here are some basic guidelines for the beginning of the season…

  • When possible walk the course, try using a golf bag that you can wear backpack style to distribute the weight better

  • Remember that bouncing around in a golf cart can make your back pain worse

  • Take time to warm up and stretch before play begins

  • Take some practice swings during the round to keep your muscles limber and warm

  • Limit the time spent on the driving range; many common injuries are caused by overuse of muscles

  • Talk to your golf pro, you may need an adjustment to your swing that will put less stress on your back

  • If your back hurts, take a few days off

  • Always bend your knees to tee your ball, replace divets, and to lift a heavy golf bag

  • Endurance, flexibility and strength are important things to keep in mind

  • If you suffer from back pain, a regular exercise program is a must
