Fitness: Don’t Let Joint Pain Make You Frown

As we age, our joints react to years of wear and tear which can sometimes lead to osteoarthritis or to injury.  The pain of degenerating conditions is caused by a breakdown in the cushioning cartilage material inside the joints.  Movement in the hips, knees, lower back and neck can become difficult.

Here are a few precautions that will help:

  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight
  • Overweight people are more likely to develop osteoarthritis in the knees
  • Stay fit by engaging in moderate exercise every day to increase your bone density and strengthen your muscles
  • Do warm up exercises and start off slowly with any exercise activity
  • Use a knee pad when gardening, or for other activities
  • Talk to a healthcare professional about taking a cartilage-building supplement, minerals or vitamins
