Homes & Gardens: Holiday Shopping Tips to Ease Your Holiday Stress

In a perfect world, everyone would love the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and all that it entails.  But for many, the stress of shopping can quickly turn happy times to headaches.

Some seniors are often faced with the added challenge of mobility and are reluctant to rely on family members, as they strive to maintain their independence.

Even those who are still active and able to get around can be faced with the daunting uncertainty of WHAT to buy.  It is difficult for anyone to keep up with fads and trends and all the latest gadgets that teens and children are so keen on.

The old standby of putting cash in a card is sometimes frowned upon by the parents of these teens and younger children, as the money can too easily be spent on frivolous or unnecessary day to day items like candy, movies and fast food.

Gift certificates or gift cards are more practical and far more personal.  Most stores now offer cards in different denominations and most will offer this service over the phone with a credit card.  Simply allow enough time for mailing to ensure that you receive the cards ordered well before the holidays.

But what about you?  How do you tell them that you really don’t need another bathrobe or pair of slippers, and you have developed an allergy to your favorite perfume?  You really have no use for a bread maker.  And who needs a fancy DVD player when you’re happy watching the daily news and a few sitcoms?  Try to encourage your family members to give of their time instead.

Wouldn’t it be nice if those young grandsons did your yard work for six months?  Don’t you wish the nieces and nephews offered to bring you a meal when they drop in for a visit?  How about some housekeeping services -- a room makeover, perhaps.  That way you can get an up-dated look in your home AND still enjoy all of your favorite antiques and treasures.
