Homes & Gardens: A New Cart on the Block
Halton welcomes the GreenCart to its waste management team. This fall, 5,000 Halton residents in five neighbourhoods across the Region began participating in Halton’s GreenCart demonstration program and started making a difference in their communities. The new GreenCart demonstration program is like a Blue Box for your kitchen scraps and is key to helping extend the life of our landfill, while continuing efforts towards environmental protection. Currently, almost 45 per cent of an average household garbage bag is made up of material that could be going in the GreenCart. This new program, collects material like kitchen scraps (including meat and bones) and paper towels at the curb in the GreenCart, instead of in a garbage bag. GreenCarts are picked up every week, on the regular garbage collection day. The material is co-collected with the garbage in a special truck. Regional staff is continually monitoring the GreenCart demonstration program and will be reporting to Council with program findings next fall. Regional Council will then decide whether or not to expand the GreenCart program Region-wide. For more information contact Halton Region at 905.825.6000 or toll free at 1.866.442.5866.
