Many people are not aware that they require excess hospital/medical coverage even when traveling within Canada. While most provincial health benefits can be used across Canada, you should be aware of the numerous medical services that OHIP will not cover in other Canadian provinces or territories:
- Ambulance Services – land and air ambulance originating outside Ontario
- Prescription drugs from pharmacies
- Emergency dental care under certain circumstances
- Physiotherapy and chiropractic care as well as some other specialist services
- Rental of wheelchair or other minor medical appliances
- Private and semi-private hospital rooms
- Private Duty Nursing
There are many emergency situations that OHIP simply does not cover at all:
- Subsistence allowance if your return is delayed due to sickness or injury of an accompanying family member or travel companion.
- Hospital allowance for incidental expenses.
- Return of vehicle.
- Return of travel companion to Ontario in the event of your medical return.
- Return airfare, meals and accommodation and emergency medical insurance coverage for a family member to visit you in the event of your hospitalization, or for identification purposes in the event of death.
- In the event of death, costs incurred to return the deceased home or for cremation or burial at the place of death.
- Escort and return of your children in the event of your medical repatriation or hospitalization.
Emergency travel and medical insurance can give you extensive benefits to help protect you against the high costs of an unexpected travel or medical emergency.
