Health Care in Canada: Don’t Let Arthritis Stop Your Passions

Arthritis doesn’t have to slow you down, especially if you adapt the ways that you garden and golf.  With the right tools and equipment, good techniques, and proper preparation, there are no reasons that people with arthritis can’t enjoy themselves this summer.

Gardening Tips

  • If kneeling, make sure you use a foam kneeling pad, or kneepads

  • Rest occasionally on chairs or benches in your garden, or use a rolling stool

  • Switch tasks frequently and take breaks when needed

  • Use sharp and well oiled tools

  • Try on a carpenter’s apron for size: the large pockets are great for carrying tools

  • Pad the handles of your hand tools with foam to make for an easier grip

  • Use tools that have long handles to help you avoid bending

  • For comfort, use raised bed that allow you to sit or stand while you work

Golfing Tips

  • Stretching before you play is a must

  • Go for a short walk before playing to loosen your joints and take a few practice swings

  • Using tees will help you avoid striking the ground and jarring your joints

  • Use tape to build up the grip size on your clubs to help you hold them more easily

  • Clubs with lightweight graphite shafts are the best to use to help absorb shock
