Health Care in Canada: Be Prepared

There are so many other things on our minds these days once we finally force ourselves into the Doctor’s office we usually forget something.  Whether it’s a question we have been meaning to ask or something we feel we should mention (just in case) or follow up information on a prescription or treatment.

The following are a few tips on how to better prepare for your next visit as well as a list of possible questions you may want to ask your family doctor to minimize the number of trips needed to the doctor, so you can spend more time enjoying the great weather!

Before you go

Write down what (if any) the concern is and when it started along with any symptoms you have been having such as: headaches, blurry vision, weight change, pain, weakness, etc.

  • Write down any other questions or things that you may have on your mind.
  • Be able to describe what type of pain you are having, whether it's dull, throbbing or stabbing.
  • Make a list of any medications you are taking and the dosages amounts including any vitamins, supplements, herbal treatment and pain relief tablets.
  • Take a look around to see if there's anyone else in your home having the same problem.
  • If you've had this problem before, think back to what you did for it then (especially if you were successfully treated by a different doctor).
  • Find out of there is a family history of what you are experiencing.

At the Doctor’s Office

State your main problem.

  • Describe your symptoms

  • While you're there, don't be afraid to ask your doctor to explain any medical terms you don't understand.

Question to Ask

Do I need a follow-up appointment?

  • Do I need to see a specialist?
  • How urgent is this test or treatment?
  • Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the tests?
  • Will I be called with the test results or will I have to call?
  • Are there any side effects to this medication?
  • Will this affect me in the future and how?
  • Do I need to make any dietary or lifestyle changes?
  • What do I do if my symptoms worsen?
  • What should I do if the medication isn't working?
  • How long will it take to start working? At what point should I worry?

  • Is this contagious? Contact? Airborne? etc
