Amaryllis plants can hardly wait to grow for you and display their big, beautiful, showy blooms in time for the holiday season. Pick up several large bulbs from your local garden centre. Pot the bulbs within the first two weeks of November. They grow very fast and you will be rewarded with stunning, colourful flowers that can dress up a room by themselves. Bonus: need a last minute hostess gift? Wrap a big bow around a potted amaryllis and go!
Pinecones are plentiful right now. Bring them home to dry and open up in time for use in your holiday décor.
Gather your plain glass vases, bowls, candle holders and plates and make sure they are very clean (mine go through the dishwasher). You can make simple decorations with your glass containers and fruit such as green pears, white candles, bits of evergreen and cranberries! Cranberries last a long time and they are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. Try placing some cranberries in a bowl of water with a white floating star candle. Beautiful!
Mirrors, either individual or tiles, under a centrepiece or behind a candle on a buffet, expands and reflects the beauty of your holiday décor.
And don’t forget the white mini lights. String them anywhere…along window sills, around doorways, up the stairs and across the buffet.
The simple combinations of flowers and fruit, mirrors and glass, candles and mini lights will impart a truly magical feeling to your space, large or small.
