Financial: Motoring Down The Road with Taxes on Wheels

Calculating your yearly income tax return isn’t something that excites most people, but Kathy Côté isn’t "most" people. Since December 2004, Kathy has been operating Taxes on Wheels which serves seniors, the physically challenged and anyone with a busy lifestyle. Giving discounts for seniors and/or people on a pension has made her business a sought after service.

Kathy takes her show literally "on the road", offering a free consultation to answer client’s questions and evaluate their needs. Charging $65 for a basic return, Kathy travels to her clients’ homes, or to retirement residences, with her laptop and printer. In an hour or two, she’ll have the return completed, and will motor back to her office to e-file it. If the return is suitable for e-filing most people receive their refunds in two weeks. An added bonus is that Kathy can aid people of all income levels.

Having done bookkeeping for 20+ years, working in small companies in financial positions, and preparing taxes for family and friends, Kathy originated the idea for her business after attending a workshop called ‘Targeting Your Market’. "I was asked what my favourite thing to do was and I immediately thought of taxes. I registered Taxes on Wheels two days later."

Since then Kathy has been extremely busy, developing her website, being profiled in The Hamilton Spectator, and attending events like the upcoming Burlington Senior Community Centre’s Health and Wellness Fair on October 20th. Using similar software to companies like H&R Block, Kathy will deal with Revenue Canada for her clients, if they are audited, or if any questions about their returns arise. As well, she’ll make adjustments to clients’ returns at no extra charge, if they are needed.
