Travel Insurance for Trips Within Canada

Universal medical coverage isn’t quite universal.  Many people never think to buy travel insurance unless they are leaving Canada.  Most provinces will cover emergency medical costs as long as you have a provincial medical card.  There are many things not covered, which can create big bills to pay.

Provincial health care plans may not pay:

  • Drugs prescribed in the course of an office consultation
  • Ambulance services (land, sea, air)
  • Return of your vehicle if you were driving or boating
  • Appliance rentals such as wheelchairs or crutches
  • Long-term care services
  • Dental care under certain circumstances
  • Bringing a family member to the bedside of an ill person
  • Board and lodging costs for a traveling companion
