Insurance: Warranties: Buyer Beware

Most people don’t always read the fine print on an extended warranty or service contract until it’s too late.

Many retailers offer good packages on high ticket items and electronics.  The trick is to know what you are buying.

When selecting a service contract or extended warranty, what do you need to know?

  • Ask questions.  Find out exactly what is and is not covered.
  • Use an example i.e.  What happens if the item is damaged by moisture (spill or rain, etc.)?
  • What are the limits of coverage?
  • Is there any deductible/co-payment?
  • If after investigation/diagnostics the damage/repair is not covered, make sure there is no charge to you.
  • What if any regular maintenance is required/covered?
  • Is there a replacement clause?
  • Are you dealing with the manufacturer or the retailer?

READ THE FINE PRINT.
