Real Estate: Ideas for Summer Energy Savings

The best way to start your summer energy savings is to buy an energy-efficient air conditioner.  For central air conditioners, the most energy-efficient models have the ENERGY STAR® logo alongside the EnerGuide rating.

For room air conditioners, look for the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) printed on the EnerGuide label.  The higher the EER, the less electricity the unit uses to do the same job.  The correct size air conditioner is important for both comfort and efficiency.  If the unit is too large, it may lower the temperature quicker but it will not run long enough to remove the excess humidity.  A unit that is too small has to run longer so your operating costs are higher.

Take control of your air conditioner:

  • Set the thermostat at the highest level for comfort.
  • 25ºC/77ºF is recommended for occupied rooms while rooms that will be unoccupied for more than four hours can be set at 28º.  Programmable thermostats can add to your savings.
  • Shut air conditioning off if space will be unoccupied for 24 hours.
  • Don’t block the air conditioner vent with drapes or furniture.

More tips…

Outside, use the sun to your advantage.  Solar blankets can heat your pool when it’s not in use.  Solar lights are an inexpensive way to extend the evening use of your backyard for summer entertaining.

Outdoor grilling takes pressure off the electrical grid and helps keep your indoors from heating up, but no peeking – keep the grill cover closed to prevent heat loss.  Defrosting before grilling will also cut your energy use.  While the grill is hot, cook a few meals ahead to save both time and energy.
