Real Estate: Protect Yourself Against Theft
Garage door
- Always leave the door closed
- Padlock the door tracks if you are away for awhile
- Don’t leave the door opener in your car, store it in your house
Reinforce your doors
- If your door is hollow, consider having it replaced
- The best lock is useless if one good kick will break it down
Front door
- A door that opens outward has hinges accessible from outside
- Make hinges impossible to remove by flattening both ends of the pins
- Or insert a screw in the centre that cannot be removed
Peephole
- Give children instructions not to open the door when you’re not home
- Chain bolts are not to be trusted, once the door is open, a good shove is all that is needed to break the latch
Patio doors
- Drill holes in the frame at the top and bottom to insert bolts
- Slide the bolts into place when the doors are closed
- A piece of wood in the track will add more security
Double-hung windows
- Drill a downward-angled hole through the first sash and halfway through the second
- Immobilize the windows by inserting a large pin into the hole
Sliding windows
- Can be secured with a pin through the two sashes
- Place a length of wood in the tracks
- Fasten the pin to the sash with a chain
