Real Estate: How to Go Green and Give Green Gifts

Give your family the greenest gift of all. Made in Canada matters. It’s everybody’s business now. A tree can only do so much. Get inspired with environmental gift tips.

How to Go Green & Give Green Gifts?

  • Lighting fixtures and a supply of energy-saving light bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR label.

  • New low-flow or ultra-low flow toilets (6 litres per flush or less).  Extremely useful. Factor in the 24% saving per average Canadian home’s water bill and your gift will be a guaranteed green winner.
  • A low-flow faucet aerator designed to oxygenate water, or manipulate its flow cutting water use by up to 30 per cent.
  • A low flow showerhead or one that has an off lever allowing you to turn off the water without changing the temperature setting while you are soaping up and shampooing your hair.
  • Micro-sprinklers and timers for setting watering limits both ensuring a thorough job.
  • Programmable electronic thermostats save power and set the temperature to meet your personal schedules.
  • Water heater insulation blankets that reduce the standby heat loss.
  • ENERGY STAR rated appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators and stoves offer huge savings both on energy bills and in the form of government rebates.

Looking for something that your home owners can take with them?

  • A kettle that saves water, time and energy by releasing and boiling exactly the right amount of water every time.

  • Solar garden lights. The power that they use is created by the solar panels inside of them which means not using any electricity.

  • Rechargeable batteries and rechargers are great especially for those with kids.

  • Electric frying pans. Require less electricity than the range top to cook the same quantity of food.

  • TVs that earn the ENERGY STAR label. Starting in November 2008, a new, much more stringent ENERGY STAR specification for TVs will be effective that includes requirements for both standby and active (when they're on) modes.
