Be a Santa to a Senior

Want to help brighten a senior’s holidays? Why not work together with Changing Gears in the launch of a new Halton initiative called "Be a Santa to a Senior." We are joining with other for profit, senior related businesses to make this a reality. Be A Santa to a Senior was launched on November 2nd at the Burlington and Milton Walmart stores, and at Zellers at Hopedale Mall in Oakville.

Your participation in this heartwarming program will touch the community and bring people together in a worthwhile cause this holiday season. You can help to bring joy to our community’s seniors, and make positive memories for all involved.

We need to know the names of Halton seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the holiday season, and who may be lonely and financially needy. If you have a neighbour, friend, or family member who falls within these categories we’d like to hear from you.

What can you do?

Due to the new Canadian privacy issue, we need you to provide a consent form to the participant

  • They will be asked to fill out a wish form to indicate the gift that they desire
  • These forms are available from Danna Wilson-Chuchmach at Home Instead Senior Care

If you decide to buy a gift:

  • Remove a wish from a Christmas tree at Walmart or Zellers and buy a senior a gift
  • Ideas include inexpensive items such as slippers, socks, gloves, hand lotion, toiletry items, Christmas decorations, or a pre-paid phone card
  • For a special gift create a stocking for a senior. Visit our Shopping section to read an article on this topic.
  • Gifts do not have to be purchased at Walmart or Zellers
  • After purchasing the gift, place it under the Christmas tree

Volunteers are needed for gift wrapping parties taking place in early December. Parties are being held December 4th at the Milton Sports Centre, time to be confirmed, and December 10th from 1-4 pm. at Heritage Place Seniors Residence, Burlington.

We also need people to help with deliveries during the following week, and to visit briefly with the seniors. Read your local media to find out more as the event unfolds. For more information call Danna at Home Instead Senior Care at 905.847.8433.

Many criminals target seniors in the belief that they are less likely to fight back. But you don’t have to be a victim. Halton Regional Police have put together these tips on how to prevent crime at home.
